Retention And The Importance Of What We Say And Do

Understanding Important Aspects Of Retention Will Help Guide You To More Effective Personal Branding

Understanding how your prospects retain your message will allow you to design more effective marketing strategies and techniques. Taking action on these principles is one of the keys to your succes as an internet marketer.

It makes no sense for you to keep watching training webinars and attending daily or weekly training calls if you keep forgetting what was shown or said. You will never get your business off the ground if you do not put the training from your team into action. Anything less and I guarantee that within a month, you will be suffering from paralysis by analysis, getting stuck attending all the training calls and webinars but not actually doing anything. Soon, attending such training does not remain an income producing activity because you don’t put the training to action, and you end up quitting your internet business or stop marketing your affiliate program.

Let me give you some quick numbers. As people, we retain:

  • 10% of what we read,
  • 20% of what we hear,
  • 30% of what we see,
  • 50% of what we hear and see,
  • 70% of what we say, and
  • 90% of what we say and do.

Wow! 90% retention by both saying and doing! Now what does this mean? It means the next time you are on a training call or webinar from your business system (or play an archive recording from your back office), take notes on 1 or 2 things related to a specific topic you can take action on. Then GO DO IT! Then record a video about it and SAY IT! Do … and … say. I guarantee that the little piece of effective marketing you applied is now learned and can be tweaked for more effectiveness and taught to your team or downline as you become a leader and authority in your market.

How do you think my main internet business and real estate investing business started booming over the Summer of 2009? In May, I started doing the techniques I outlined in my free Social Media Marketing Guide course then in August, I created a bunch of video tutorials and taught what worked for me. I took action then I taught, further retaining what I learned. All I do now is tweak what works to make it better and what doesn’t work to get it producing good results. Even in my real estate business, I teach a monthly class on short sale negotiating. Now it’s your turn to go do something constructive for your business.

Daily Action Plan for Your Internet Home Based Business

So You Want To Be More Like Your “6-Figure Monthly Income Earning Sponsor” In Your Internet Home Based Business?

Then you need to do what all top earners do in all forms of internet marketing: Perform income producing activities according to their DAILY ACTION PLAN. What is your Daily Action Plan? Well, you are about to find out.

Your daily action plan needs to be, of course, daily.  If you are just starting out in your internet home based business, then daily includes the weekend.  Pick about 4 hours per day that you can spend on your business.  I’m serious.  If you want to be successful, then stop playing around and dedicate the time necessary to build and market your business effectively.

If you need to spread that around then fine, but don’t split your time up too much.  Having two 2-hour action windows is fine, but a lot of smaller windows causes you to do non-income producing activity like responding to all you emails and zoning out on Twitter and Facebook. Your daily action plan needs to be consistent so you always enter this window of action ready to work on income producing activity.  You are focused.  You are driven.

So how do I get focused when I start?  Well, luckily for me, my particular internet business system has an incredible back office with lots of archived recorded training calls and webinars, so I just start one of those and listen to it while doing some sets of pushups and other exercises to get the blood pumping and the eyes opened and the energy flowing.

Then while the training call is still playing, I do the small but necessary tasks like quickly scanning my Twitter DMs and @replies for tweets I want to respond to, then do the same with Facebook messages, and even some email.  When it comes to email, though, I only mark the ones I will reply to for later so I have an idea how much time I need to leave for that activity.

I save email responding as my last activity since it can be the most time draining activity, especially for me, since my stuttering problem has over the years caused me to be addicted to writing.  My shear fatigue at 2am keeps me on task to get through my emails quickly.

Before I get to the written tasks in my action plan, I set up my Hummingbird Twitter application to auto follow and unfollow, then do a quick sanity check on my automated Twitter feeds and scheduled tweets from SocialOomph, HootSuite, and various other accounts.  I end my prep work with some friend requests on Facebook and Youtube.  So usually, my social media obligations are just about finishing up when the 60-90 minute archived training call is done.

So what is an income producing activity?  It is an action that when completed, will generate more leads, improve your search engine ranking, increase your ad click through rate, decrease your Google AdWords cost per click, increase you conversion percentage, and so on.  It is an activity that either puts you in a better position to make money or reduces your expenses.

How About Some Examples?

  • Writing keyword rich articles;
  • Setting up automated tweets pointing to your blog or hub page or any articles or videos you made;
  • Producing videos with keyword rich descriptions and tags;
  • Submitting press releases;
  • Adding followers and friends to Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube;
  • Generating, reviewing, and tweaking your ad groups and keywords in your various pay-per-click accounts;
  • Generating search engine optimization reports on your various web pages and updating your pages per their recommendations;
  • Submitting free classified ads to highly pulling sites only (it could be a time drain otherwise);
  • Setting up or tweaking your banner ads;
  • Updating your offline marketing (postcards, flyers, business cards, and so on);
  • … and anything else that drives traffic to your site, converts visitors to leads and LEADS to CUSTOMERS!

Got it?

One other point to make is that you should write down the next day’s plan on the night before. That way, you have a simple check list to follow the next day.

Be What You Want To Become.  Leaders Take Action.  Now Get To Work.

What Are You Doing Daily To Market Your Business?

Just Starting A Home Based Business Or Struggling In One? Then I Have Some Quick Questions For You.

  • What are you doing or planning on doing today that is going to grow your business?
  • Is your business important to you or is it just a hobby?
  • If it is a business, then what is your DAILY ACTION PLAN?
  • Do you have one? Is it written down?

Most home based businesses, and especially most INTERNET home based businesses fail because people think that their BUSINESS SYSTEM should do all the work while they sit back and collect fat paychecks. Remember that any business system is designed for the MASSES and is meant to get you to a mediocre state like everybody else. But if you are in this to SUCCEED, then you need to do more. Just by making the decision to TAKE DAILY ACTION, you are ahead of 95% of all home based business owners. Watch the video and read the rest of this post to understand just what your action plan should consist of. You do not have to do everything here, just work to be excellent at a few of these daily tasks and expand as necessary.

Most people working a home business are still employed. They signed up for a business opportunity or joined an affiliate program (or 20) in hopes that one day the income from that activity will surpass their salary at their job. If that’s you then pay attention.

Regardless of what your business sponsor tells you, if you want to make more than a few hundred dollars per month, then you need a plan. And not just any plan, but a plan that involves daily action performing income producing activity. Without a plan, you are hopelessly checking email, Twitter and Facebook status, and letting the rubber stamped landing page your company provided you remain in its original state with no personal branding whatsoever. This is EXACTLY why most home based businesses fail. There is no DAILY ACTION PLAN.

I’m still working for an aerospace defense company writing software and I don’t plan on leaving my team there until I get a few more projects completed. So this is what I have to do to be successful in my different businesses. I generally work from 10pm until 2am on income producing activities, sleep until 6am then start the day over.  And this 4 hour window is consistent 7 days a week. It has to be. I make a great income when I work on my business, tweaking my pay per click accounts, writing articles, producing videos, attending to my social media accounts, optimizing my web pages, analyzing my lead sources, answering questions from my team members, providing them with support, and on and on. This is the income producing activity that needs to be done to build a successful online home based business within months. My goals are too important for me to treat this as a hobby. How about you?

So if you are running an internet home based business and are still employed and are not making over 20 grand per month, then I want to know what your daily window of action is. Do you have one? If not, why the heck not? If you do, then how long is it? Are all your income generating activities up front before you check a single email?

Figure out right now if your business is a real business or a hobby. If it is a business, and you need it to provide you with a better lifestyle than you are living right now, then it is worth your time to generate daily action plans and follow through on them.

Action is the only thing that decides your level of success. Not your business system, not your product (every product has a niche market), not your sponsor if he’s ignoring you. NO ONE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR SUCCESS BUT YOU. Now create your daily action plan and get to work.
